The 'third party' never caught on fully because all it succeeded in doing was capturing votes from one side or another and was blamed for the loss of this candidate or that.
Multi-party systems seem to work better in parliamentary style systems than they do in ours.
The Libertarians are gaining support in the US but their support for complete legalization of narcotics and their isolationist view internationally make them less than populist (in my opinion). They end up taking votes needed for a non-Libertarian conservative candidate.
I admit that we haven't seen a conservative in the White House since Reagan and there have been very few conservative candidates from which to choose since then.
